South Goa Court Recruitment 2024 (eCourts.gov.in) New Notification

Goa transitioned from being a Portuguese Colony to a Union Territory on 19 December 1961, and later achieved Statehood on 30 May 1987, as an independent state of India through the Goa, Daman & Diu Re-organization Act, 1987. The legal framework for this transition involved the application of the Goa, Daman & Diu (Laws) Regulation, 1962, in conjunction with relevant sections of the Code of Criminal Proceedings. The Union Territory comprised three districts: Goa, Daman, and Diu, forming a single Sessions Division. The Court of Sessions for the Union Territory was established in Panaji, addressing matters under the Indian Penal Code, Code of Criminal Procedure, and Evidence Act. Additionally, Courts of Judicial Magistrate First Class were set up.

Under the Goa, Daman & Diu Civil Courts Act, of 1965, District & Subordinate Civil Courts were instituted. The main District Court, headquartered in Panaji, covered the entire Union Territory. Subordinate Courts, including Civil Judges (Sr. Division) and Civil Judges (Jr. Division), were established in district headquarters and some talukas.

South Goa District came into existence in 1981, with Taluka Courts falling under its jurisdiction. Ponda Taluka was later shifted to North Goa District. In 1987, the government created two additional Courts—Sanguem and Canacona—in South Goa, with the District & Sessions Court commencing operations on 4 February 1981. Initially housed in a rented building until 1992, it now occupies a new building near Colva Junction in Margao, the commercial capital.

The new building, inaugurated by the then Hon’ble Justice G.D. Kamat and Goa’s Law Minister Shri Luizinho Faleiro, offers ample parking space. Spanning 5000 sq. meters, it includes an additional area of 2290 sq. meters, surrounded by a compound wall to prevent encroachment. Notably, Video Conferencing facilities were introduced in 2009, connecting the court to Sada Jail & Aguada Jail, inaugurated by the Hon’ble Chief Justice, Shri Swantenter Kumar, and Chief Minister Shri Digamber Kamat.
